Electric Vehicle (EV) Cost of Ownership

Electric vehicles have always been more expensive than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, but it looks like things could be changing. While the initial price tag of an electric vehicle will still likely be higher than a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle, the cost of ownership could be lower. Here are a few reasons why.

Fuel Savings

For some drivers, the fuel savings alone can make an electric vehicle worth the initial purchase. According to research from Consumer Reports, owning an electric vehicle instead of a gasoline-powered model could save you as much as $1,000 a year on fuel costs.

Maintenance and Repair

Electric vehicles might also require less maintenance and fewer repairs than other vehicles. They do require some - all vehicles do - but they aren't as mechanically complex as gasoline-powered vehicles, and they don't require as many fluid changes. Overall, you can expect to spend about half as much money maintaining an electric vehicle as a gasoline-powered model.

Depreciation

Research has also suggested that electric vehicles retain their value as well as or better than comparable gasoline-powered cars, especially now that newer vehicles can travel as far as 200 miles on a single full charge.
