Body Styles, Trims & New Features

Sedan, coupe and convertible are the three body styles the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in. You can get each body style in a variety of trims, including S 550, AMG® S 63 and AMG® 65. The sedan also comes in S 550 e plug-in hybrid and S 600 trims.

The four-passenger convertible model is the newest member of the family this year. On the car, you can find a collection of features, including leather seating, adaptive air suspension, four-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry/ignition and a hands-free power trunklid, depending on which trim you choose.

Other notable changes for 2017 is the addition of a standard nine-speed automatic on S 550 and an optional sunroof for the sedan. The S550 coupe also gets 19- or 20-inch AMG® wheels and sporty styling.


A turbo 4.7L V8, delivering 449 hp and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, powers the S 550 model of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class in Lincoln. As previously mentioned, a nine-speed automatic is paired with the engine.

The S600 gets a turbo 6.0L V12, offering 523 hp and 612 lb.-ft. of torque, along with a seven-speed automatic.

Move up to the AMG® S 63 and a turbo 5.5L V8, producing 577 hp and 664 lb.-ft. of torque, is present. This engine is matched to a unique AMG® seven-speed automatic.

A turbo 6.0L V12, outputting 621 hp and 738 lb.-ft. of torque, is fitted to the AMG® S 65. It gets the same seven-speed automatic as the AMG® S 63.

Even the S550e plug-in hybrid, which is noted in most 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reviews, comes with a solid turbo 3.0L V6, an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery pack and a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Safety Functions

Standard safety functions offered on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class include airbags, a drowsy driving warning system, a collision prevention system, automatic collision notification, traction control and stability control. Buyers can also tack on the Driver Assistance Package, which adds lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian recognition, advanced adaptive cruise control and rear-impact detection.
