What's New for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is as much a status symbol as it is a luxury SUV. Launched four decades ago as a military transporter, the boxy full-size SUV rose through the ranks to become one of the most prestigious vehicles on the road. For fear of losing its ever-growing legion of devotees, Mercedes-Benz dared not modernize its exterior styling over the years but instead upgraded its comfort, technology, and safety features to match current standards. Mercedes-Benz knows that the upscale drivers spend most of their time on busy city streets and do not pay top dollar for off-road capabilities only. Thus, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes with an expanded list of creature-comfort features and drives better thanks to an improved suspension and an updated transmission. Other updates include two new Designo Ocean Blue Metallic and Designo Orange Metallic colors. Also, the G 550 and the AMG® G63 get the Designo Manufaktur Red and Black Edition trim and the AMG® Performance Studio package, respectively.

Under the Hood

2018 Mercedes-Benz G-ClassA 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 developing 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque powers the base 2018 G 550. EPA estimates that the engine returns 13/14 mpg city/highway. The lifted G 550 4×42 model harnesses the same output from the same engine and returns 11/11 mpg, a decent figure given that it offers an amazing 17.2 inches of ground clearance. Stepping up to the AMG® G63 earns you a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 that cranks out 563 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. The engine delivers about 12/14 mpg. The top-of-the-range AMG® G65 benefits from a thunderous 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 that spits out 621 horses and 738 lb-ft of torque. EPA rates the 6.0-liter engine at 11/13 mpg. A permanent four-wheel drive is standard on all models, as is a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 G-Class further includes three locking differentials and a two-speed transfer case.

2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Safety

2018 Mercedes-Benz G-ClassThe usual array of airbags, adaptive cruise control, Parking Assist Parktronic, blind-spot warning, an illuminated entry system, a rear-view camera, Mercedes-Benz emergency telematics, and trailer stability assist make up the 2018 G-Class standard safety tech. The G-Class offers a stellar view out of the windshield thanks to a high seating position, narrow roof pillars, and a short dash. The four-wheel drive also helps to stabilize the 2018 G-Class.
