A lot of emphasis is placed on how drivers can protect themselves and their passengers. But as a child, you’re probably not the one behind the wheel. Instead, you might be a passenger or a young pedestrian learning the importance of looking both ways before crossing. To help kids understand safe interactions with vehicles, Mercedes-Benz USA and Safe Kids Worldwide have collaborated to create an educational resource.

Clifford Takes a Ride

Generations of children have enjoyed stories about Clifford, the big red dog. In his latest adventure, Clifford learns how to ride safely in a car and stay aware of vehicles when entering or exiting one. This story is part of the Driving Your Future initiative, which aims to teach kids essential road safety skills.

Key Pedestrian Safety Tips

You can help keep yourself and your children safe by always looking both ways before crossing the street—even if there’s a walk signal. This habit is important because you can’t always rely on cars to stop as expected. Additionally, don’t assume drivers will spot you in time to prevent an accident.

Wearing reflective tape, carrying a flashlight, or dressing in bright clothing while walking at night or early in the morning also makes it easier for drivers to see you. This visibility can help prevent potential accidents.

Lastly, avoid distractions like talking on the phone or listening to loud music while walking. Staying alert to your surroundings significantly reduces the risk of an accident.

Staying Safe in a Car

Always wear a seat belt while in the car. Children under 12 should sit in the back and use a booster seat for added protection in case of an accident. Passengers should avoid distracting the driver, as focus is critical for safety.
