Winward Racing and Mercedes-AMG have joined forces to achieve an impressive milestone: they're now leading the IMSA GTD standings following a standout win at the recent 12 Hours of Sebring. This success highlights the exceptional synergy between Winward and Mercedes, underscoring their excellence in the world of motorsport.
What's the Big Deal?
The recent victory marks a significant achievement for both teams. By securing an early lead in the season, Winward and Mercedes—reigning titleholders—have set a strong tone for the remainder of the racing year. Their triumph at the 73rd Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring was powered by the formidable No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 team and its talented driver lineup: Philip Ellis, Russell Ward, and Indy Dontje. This win not only adds another accolade to their record but also positions Mercedes as a strong contender for yet another championship.
Inside the Race
The Sebring race featured some of Mercedes' most skilled drivers. Reflecting on his past races, Philip Ellis said he wasted “no time” in pushing forward—taking the lead within just 15 minutes of the race's start and holding it for nearly the entire event. Out of the 327 laps, Ellis and the team led a remarkable 67, briefly slipping from the lead only once. It was a performance marked by precision, teamwork, and determination.
Ellis, part of the No. 57 squad, has been instrumental in the team's recent successes, including a strong showing at Daytona—one of the most prestigious races on the global stage. With these impressive performances, the team now sets its sights on the upcoming Grand Prix of Long Beach, held on the iconic street circuit. Notably, this year's event marks the 50th anniversary of the race, and the team is optimistic about their prospects.
