You might notice one day that your car feels shaky or wobbly. The problem might get worse when you accelerate, or it might be more apparent when you step on the brakes. Multiple issues can cause car shaking. Some problems may involve major parts of the vehicle, including the engine and brakes, which means you should schedule an appointment as soon as possible for repairs. Additionally, knowing some of the common reasons behind the car's shaking can help you narrow in on the cause.
Brakes
The brakes are put under pressure when you drive. One indication of brake-related problems is that the shaking begins or worsens when you hit the brakes. In many cars, the brakes have parts called the brake pads and rotors. The pads generally cushion the rotors and keep them from grating against each other. When the pads wear out, however, the rotors make contact with each other and get worn down due to metal contact on metal. The brake pads, rotors, or both may need to be replaced if the rotors are damaged.
Tires
Tires can also cause your car to shake. The tires, like the brakes, are subject to stress from driving. Ideally, you should have the car's tires inspected a few times each year, or about 5,000 to 6,000 miles, but the owner's manual in your vehicle will have the most precise information for your car. Most routine tire inspections can catch problems with the tires before they cause serious damage. One issue that might arise with the tires is uneven wear, which may shake and vibrate, especially with acceleration. Tread that has worn too thin might make your car vibrate as well.
Wheels
Several problems stemming from the wheels can make your car start shaking. Damage to the wheels is one possible cause. If the lug nuts, which are components that affix the wheels to the car, are not tight enough, the vehicle can start shaking or vibrating as a result. A mechanic will also tell you if the wheels need to be balanced or corrected so that they spin properly.
Engine
The engine contains multiple parts that can break or need cleaning to function at their best. One of those parts is called the engine air filter, which normally keeps dirt, dust, and other particles from getting into the engine, and in turn, the fuel lines, which causes problems. The spark plugs should be checked, if not replaced, after 80,000 miles, and the engine's radiator may need to be repaired.
Axles
The car's axles can lead to vibrations and shaking in the suspension if they become contaminated or broken. CV joints, which resemble boots, can tear and let dirt and dust into the axles, which causes them to shake.
